A stinkin’ good soap recipe

In 2000, Gainesville resident Ariale Lewis began experimenting with simple homemade soap and discovered that her skin was happier and healthier. By 2001, she was setting up at the local farmer’s market in historic downtown Gainesville, Florida. The community began to talk about the funky local lady selling some really stinkin’ good soap. That’s where Milan Mixson first encountered Stinky Lewis’ Soap in 2004. She was so taken by the earthy soap that their labels instantly earned a place in her scrapbook of inspiration.

Eventually, after fifteen years of soapmaking, Ariale was ready to retire. Milan couldn’t imagine it ceasing to be (especially that Patchouli bar with Hemp oil, oh my), and asked Ariale if she would teach Milan to keep supplying the community with that stinkin’ good soap. The apprenticeship began, and Milan became the Official Soapmaker of Stinky Lewis’ Soap in 2016.

We still use Ariale’s original premium small-batch soap recipes to this day, right here in lush Gainesville, Florida. We take skincare seriously and therefore work diligently to source the best quality ingredients. Our base oils, the main ingredients of soap, are all organic and are certified sustainably sourced whenever possible. We think nature’s beauty and bounty provides all we need and more, and this can be seen in our soap formulations.

Meet the Maker

Milan is a lover of bodycare, music, history, stories, and nature. She takes painstaking care to research every ingredient and aspect of a recipe to be sure she is creating products that she would love to use, would trust for her family to use, and would be proud for her community to use. A local North-Central Floridian, when not in the soap room, she may be found in her garden or at the springs.

“Making soap the old fashioned way, with just a few touches of modern science applied for consistent results, is such a pleasurable experience, akin to immersing oneself in the kitchen. Your hard work and mess pay off when you get to enjoy something nourishing, unique, and lovely.” -Milan
