High quality handmade bar soap is softer than commercial bar soap due to the skin-loving glycerin that is still present. The result is that a little goes a long way. Keeping the bar as dry as possible, rub it onto damp hands/cloth/loofah/sponge, and then use that to wash. The bar does not need to be rubbed on all skin surfaces; you’ll end up with far more soap than you need, shortening the life of the bar. When not in use, make sure the bar is not in contact with water.
